Maria would definitely listen to this song on a sad day, or when she is feeling guilty. The title of this song itself fits the mood for Maria. Specifically, when Maria accuses Matt of almost killing Furball, she was wrong and she definitely felt guilty, and sorry.
“And I’m getting bored waiting ‘round for you, we’re not getting any younger. And, I won’t look back ‘cause there no use, it’s time to move forward.” - Near the beginning of the novel, Maria comforts Matt and stays with him for the night. She gets pretty disappointed when Matt doesn’t talk to anyone for a few days. Maria was ready to move on, and to stop caring. It was time for her to move forward.

For it won’t be long, til I’m gonna need somebody to lean on.” When Matt was stuffed in his ‘prison’, Maria came to the rescue and offered food to Matt. She comforted Matt, and helped him in all ways possible. She treated Matt like he was a real person, unlike everyone else. I’m sure Maria would want Matt to stick up for her, and do the same. “We all have pain, we all have sorrow, but if we are wise, we know that there’s always tomorrow.” Maria realizes Matt goes through a lot of pain, but she always tries to brighten his spirit up and hope for a better tomorrow.

To me, Maria can be very weak, and is very gullible in many cases as she believes whatever anyone says.For that reason, she is being used all the time, like the title of this song. “You know that I could use somebody, someone like you.” Maria probably feels like she is being manipulated all the time, and she could really use somebody that she could trust. Someone that wouldn’t manipulate her, and someone she could always talk to, someone she could trust.
Taylor Swift - Mean

Maria would listen to this right after the birthday party. After Matt forced Maria to kiss him, she really hated him. That’s why I feel like the line “Why you gotta be so mean?” really fits in. Though Matt loves her, often she feels as if all he is doing is being mean. After kissing Matt she was really upset and decided to ignore him. “I walk with my head down trying to block you out” I feel as if this is exactly what Maria must have been thinking at that time. He redundantly embarrassed her in front of everyone and for that all he was to Maria was mean. Matt’s words can lead to certain things that hurt Maria. “You with your words like knifes and swords that you use against me”. Since Matt is the clone of El Patron he has a lot of power as long as El Patron is around. Anything he says goes, just like how Matt told Maria he wanted a kiss, and no matter how unwilling she was, since El Patron was around, she was forced to do it.

“You tell me that your sorry, didn’t think I'd turn around and say, It’s too late to apologize”
Maria would be listening to this probably right after she assumed Matt killed her dog Furball. The line “It’s too late to apologize” would definitely say that to Matt due to the fact that she thought that he killed her dog at that time. Since she thought her dog had already died, his apology would mean nothing to her considering his sorry wouldn’t bring back the life of her dog. Another quote that popped out at me was: “You tell me that you need me then you go and cut me down.” Matt tells her that he really loves her but Maria constantly gets upset because of him. She loves him, but she can’t take it when he hurts her.
“Your guard is up, and I know why, because the last time you saw me, Is still burned in the back of your mind, you gave me roses, and I left them there to die.” Matt was so kind to Maria, but then she had to leave, and when she did he was extremely lonely. It’s interesting how Maria comes back and Matt bounces back to her, and listens and appreciates her. PG 210 The other quote from the song, “These days, I haven’t been sleeping, staying up, playing back myself leaving, when your birthday passed, and I didn’t call.” reminds me of when Maria left after the birthday party, and she didn’t leave on good terms. After the birthday party incident Maria didn’t call, so it seemed like she completely forgot about him, so these lyrics definitely speak for what happened between Matt and Maria. PG 110

Can’t Be Tamed - Miley Cyrus Chosen By: Ashika
“I can’t be tamed, I can’t be changed.” Many people believe that Maria is making the wrong decisions because she talks to clones. However her mind can’t be changed, once she makes a decision, majority of the time that is the final decision from her point of view. This quote in the song also enhances Maria’s personality, “If there is a question about my intentions I’ll tell ya, I’m not here to sell ya.” You can’t change Maria’s mind or intentions because she may be seen as strong headed. If you ask her something she will say what she believes, but even if you disagree it won’t make a big impact on her perspective, like when Maria and Matt first met. Matt was trying to make a joke by holding up his poster, which was a picture of a man with a bullfrog sandwich and said “Ribbit on Rye”. Emilia and Steven began to laugh, Maria didn’t think the poster’s statement was funny, and she began to act serious, stubborn, and then started to cry. PG 17 She’s not there to change her opinion on anything, and she will always speak her mind.

The title of this song gives away the meaning or the soul purpose of it. Maria would definitely listen to this song because she has been stuck in ties between Tom and Matt during the book. More specifically, when Matt and her are talking but Tom all of sudden disturbs them, and this leads the kids to MacGregor’s clone.
“There are times when a woman has to say what’s on her mind, even though she knows how much it’s gonna hurt. Before I say another word let me tell you, I love you. Let me hold you close and say these words as gently as I can. There’s been another man that I’ve needed and I’ve loved but that doesn’t mean I love you less.” This quote speaks for all that Maria is thinking. She loves Matt a lot, because she believes he always listens to her. Many people do not take her seriously because she loves to help people, no matter who they are. Particularly at El Viejo’s funeral the priest started to holler at Matt and said, “Would you bring a dog to church?” He was a clone, but Maria stood up for him regardless of who he was. The specific quote, “let me hold you close and say these words as gently as I can.” I thought of when Matt was holding Maria and they were in the secret passage on page 208. She tells him, “No one at the convent listens to me like you do.”

“When she was just a girl she expected the world, but it flew away from her reach so she ran away in her sleep.” Maria expects so much from the world, which is shown through the joy she receives when she helps other people. It seems like the other girls from her school don’t even talk to her that much, she can’t get along with them because they have different interests. Maria thinks about other people and is caring. Steven and Emilia don’t even seem to appreciate her, they call her an ‘eejit’ so many times. PG 16 The specific quote ‘but it flew away from her reach so she ran away in her sleep’ reminded me of when Maria got scared and ran to Matt for comfort. She put a lot of trust in him and she even stayed overnight with him, due to her adherence towards Matt.
